Citywide Youth Coalition blog

Serving Greater New Haven, CT

Will you please ask a young person these 2 questions and send in the responses?

Posted by citywideyouth on February 28, 2012

Good afternoon CWYC members & partners,

We’re planning a special coalition meeting on Wednesday, March 21st 10 a.m. to 12 noon, at 560 Ella Grasso Blvd., New Haven.

A conversation about youth-adult partnerships in New Haven – What’s working? What are youth saying? How are our programs doing? What are some great next steps we can each take?

HERE’S WHAT’S NEEDED:

- come to the meeting with 1-2 young people’s answers to these questions

- (you all know this, but we’ll say it anyway) ask & listen & document – don’t debate; don’t forward names

- what is it that you want? what is it that you need?

- what is it about young people that adults don’t know?

We’ll all share this information at the 3/12/12 coalition meeting – so please FORWARD this information even if you can’t make the meeting.

Thanks!!

Rachel

A quick little Thursday update!

Posted by citywideyouth on February 23, 2012

Good morning – what a beautiful day!

Just a quick reminder email that we have two meetings coming up early next week:

Monday, February 27that 3pm
(please note, we have moved this start time back from 2:30 so more youth will be able to attend after school)

at The Grove (71 Orange Street)

Join us as we begin planning for our spring Youth Summit (tentative date: Saturday, May 12). At this meeting, we’ll review the over-arching plan for the event, which has been vetted and approved by these groups: Youth UnLeashed, Youth Rights Media, New Elm City Dream, Speak Life.

Also Monday, February 27that 11:30
at The Grove (71 Orange Street)

We’re holding a preliminary conversation to help plan for an important conversation at the March coalition meeting about Youth-Adult Partnerships — what’s working, what are the best practices, what has been not-so-successful. If you or your colleagues have stories, ideas or expertise on working with young people in partnership – please come to this planning meeting!

And now a quick note about that monthly Coalition meeting for March:
It’s shaping up to be a great opportunity to hear more about Youth-Adult Partnerships – so please mark your calendar and plan to join us:

Citywide Youth Coalition Meeting

Wednesday, March 21st (10am to 12 noon)

at Workforce Alliance
(see our website for directions: http://bit.ly/lh71CU).

Thanks everyone, and have a great day!

S.

PS> If you haven’t watched it yet, our video of the February Coalition meeting is getting a lot of attention out there on the interwebs! Take a look — and help pass it on to your contacts who care about success for all young people!

At our monthly Coalition meeting on 2/15/12 we heard a presentation by Laura McCargar on her work investigating the School to Prison Pipeline in Connecticut. What happens to struggling students, and how can we better "see" them before they become drop-outs or push-outs? Watch the video of Laura’s talk here: http://vimeo.com/37114189

Posted by citywideyouth on February 8, 2012

Here’s another one – The 2011-2012 Opportunities guide and workbook equips high school students with strategies and tools for pursuing their education goals.

As both a guide and workbook, Opportunities helps students

  • Choose the right college
  • Understand and fulfill admissions requirements
  • Identify the types and sources of financial aid available
  • Determine the eligibility criteria for the various types of aid
  • Complete and file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

There is a Connecticut-specific version, available in English & Spanish, both for download & printed copies.

CT Career Paths information booklet for youth

Posted by citywideyouth on February 8, 2012

Some of you may have seen this green booklet at recent coalition events. It is available for PDF download as well: http://www1.ctdol.state.ct.us/lmi/pubs/CareerPaths2010-2012.pdf

Connecticut Career Paths 2010-2012 is a guide to career decision-making. This publication was created to provide the information needed to help learners, from youth to adults, make informed decisions about their career choice and preparation. Included in the Career Table is information on the projected job openings for the near future, education and training requirements, and the earning potential for each of the occupations for your chosen field. This revised edition of Connecticut Career Paths 2010-2012 includes information on the knowledge base and fundamental skills that employers often look for in job candidates. In addition, each occupation has been assigned to one of fi ve growth ranks, from "growing much faster than average" to "growing much slower than average" based on its ten-year (2008-18) growth rate.

I am also trying to get more copies of this guide in paper form, to hand out at coalition meetings!
