10/5/11 – Youth Survey
Adam NHS, Jennifer NHS jthomas@nhsofnewhaven.org, Lydia Bornick, Melissa Whitson, Rachel Heerema
Next meeting: Wed., Nov. 2 @ 11 a.m.
Many thanks to Melissa for re-organizing the survey results!
Discussion:
* there are nuances in how youth are engaged in their educational processes
* success survey is a different lens than deficiencies
* very positive results overall
* kids who are connected to supports & services are doing very well, but we know that there are kids who are not doing well
* these supports & services are clearly creating positive expectations for young people
Next step is to create a one-pager, with a one paragraph narrative on what we did and why (youth success), and then some highlight tables or charts
* Narrative: frame of the CWYC results, positive/success measures rather than deficit-based stuff, overall, quite positive – esp. ?
* supports they indicated they needed 68% help with college: question #6
* general consensus that they want to go to college
* shift in zip code from 06511 to 06513 – college vs. jobs
* 94% continue ed. in 06511, — statistically significant? (Melissa), p. 6
* make sure we keep the message that there is a lot of great stuff happening & a lot of good kids
We agreed to edit & share the survey form with Perrin Family Foundation (once we’ve done the editing!).
We will share the results broadly.
Changes to survey for next year:
* ask what schools they are in
* demographics: options for "not in school" "in college" "GED"
* please don’t write your name!
* if you’re still in high school, are you on target for graduating, add answer "not in high school"
* are you currently attending high school: yes, no, GED, dropped-out, college
* do you know your grade point average? yes/no, what is it: _____ — trending up? getting support?
* add question about regular attendance
* what supports & services are you currently engaging: after school, summer camp, tutoring,
* REMOVE #4 – very little variability in responses – or change language
* REMOVE #7 – or radically change
* Consolidate #10-#13?
* what kinds of job/careers, schools, skill, career do you want?
We should do the survey earlier in the year, such as March or April.
See you next month!
